Tässä paperissa pyritään selvittämään tärkeimpien ulkomaisten lyhyiden korkojen vaikutus kolmen kuukauden heliborkorkoon sekä Suomen Pankin markkinainterventioiden vaikutus korkoeroon. Aineistona käytetään lähinnä viikkohavaintoja aikavälillä 1987/7 - 1989/2.
Käytettäessä viikkoaineistoa vain pieni osa ulkomaisten korkojen muutoksista näkyy heliborkoron muutoksena. Ulkomaisten korkojen muutokset selittävät heliborkoron vaihteluista vain muutaman prosentin yhden ja kahden viikon aikahorisontilla. Viiden viikon aikahorisontilla ulkoomaiset korot selittävät noin viidesosan heliborkoron vaihtelusta. Koroista jenin ja Ruotsin kruunun korkomuutokset selittävät eniten heliborin vaihteluista.
Suomen Pankin interventiot selittävät heliborkoron vaihteluista viiden viikon aikahorisontilla saman verran kuin ulkomaiset korot yhteensä. Valuuttainterventiot ovat estimointitulosten mukaan merkittävämpiä kuin sijoitustodistusinterventiot. This paper attempts to evaluate the effect of movements in the most important foreign short-term interest rates on the 3-month HELIBOR rate as well as the effect of the Bank of Finland's open-market operations on the interest ra te differential. The data used are mainly weekly observations covering the period July 1987 - February 1989.
As weekly data are used, only a small part of the changes in foreign interest rates is reflected in changes in the HELIBOR rate. Changes in foreign interest rates explain only a few per cent of the fluctuations in the HELIBOR rate over time spans of one and two weeks. Over a five-week time span, foreign interest rates explain roughly o'ne-fi fth of the vari ati on i n the HELIBOR rate. Of the vari ous interest rates considered, changes in the yen and Swedish krona interest rates explain changes in the HELIBOR rate best.
Over a five-week time span, the Bank of Finland's open-market operations explain as large a proportion of changes in the HELIBOR rate as all the foreign interest rates taken together. According to estimation results, intervention in the foreign exchange market is more significant than transactions in certificates of deposit.
